Kyoto

Best scenic spots at Kyoto by the Sea. Historical and Breathtaking View.

Konnichiwa I’m Sachi the founder of “Visit Japan with Kids”

Today, I would like to introduce a special sightseeing spot with a most spectacular view.

Amanohashidate is located in Miyazu, Northern Kyoto known as “Kyoto by the Sea”.

Amanohashidate is a natural land bridge in the north of Kyoto which is one of the three scenic spots of Japan.  It is a beautiful 3.6 km long and 20m to 170m wide sandbank of Miyazu bay with 8000 Japanese pine trees.

You can go up to The Kasamatsu Park on the top of the mountain by the chairlift or cable car to see this spectacular view.

The name “Amanohashidate” roughly translates to “bridge in heaven” because it is supposed to look like as if the bridge connects to Heaven when you look at it upside down from between your legs and bring good luck. This well-known gesture is called “Matanozoki” in Japanese.

It takes about 45 minutes to walk end to end. Alternatively, it takes about 15 minutes to cross by bicycle. Rental bicycles are available from shops and hotels around Amanohashidate Station.

There is another MUST SEE place around this area.

It is a house combines ship’s barn on the first floor, where you can lift and store the ship directly from the sea. The ship is very important as it supports daily life of the fisherman and his family.

About 230 shops are left along the bay stand side by side for about 5 kilometers.

The unique Ine buildings which have existed since the 1700s were at first storage houses for wooden boats built for hanging up fishing nets. The current Funaya were repaired along with the change of the times, the first floor is a combined boat garage and workspace for fishermen and the second floor is used as a living area.
Living by accepting and having a very close relationship with the sea, this old Funaya lifestyle has been handed down from generation to generation.

You can explore and experience this unique sight by Sea taxies or Sightseeing boats.

Sea taxies

Fishermen guide you along the coast of Ine on a cruise in their own boats. As you can confirm the original form of Ine`s funaya by observing from the seaside, first of all, riding on one of these sightseeing boats are recommended. With just one phone call you will be met at a place as far as the Ine bay, so you can call even in the middle of exploring/strolling. Foreign language materials are also available. Through the varied explanations from the boatman, from things related to the formation of the Funaya to regional festivals and the fishermen and townspeople`s lifestyles, you can gain greater understanding and knowledge about the town of Ine.

The Movie clip of the Funaya of Ine(3:45)

(All In Japanese but beautiful just to see)

Translation of the narration in this movie clip.

This region has been living with the sea by relying upon the grace of the sea from the old days.

Ine is the old fisherman’s village located in Northern Kyoto. A sheer cliff and a mountain hem approaching very close to the ocean, our ancestor still chose to live along such a complex narrow strip of land.

Funaya(boathouse) of Ine used to be written as ship’s barn in Japanese, it is a house combines ship’s barn on the first floor, where you can lift and store the ship directly from the sea. The ship is very important as it supports daily life of the fisherman and his family.

About 230 shops are left along the bay stand side by side for about 5 kilometers.

Living by accepting and having a very close relationship with the sea, this old Funaya lifestyle has been handed down from generation to generation.

Wisdom and history of living in the sea here are Beautiful Japan.
